Painting Workshop in Ireland

June 27–July 4, 2026

My connection to Ireland began serendipitously. In 2012 a friend of the family offered my wife and I and our two young boys the opportunity to use their vacation home in Ireland for the winter. Most people thought we were nuts to spend the winter in such a cold and rainy place, but the allure of a big adventure was too hard to resist. We rented our house and headed to the west coast of Ireland and an unknown future. As luck would have it, we ended up in one of the most beautiful areas of Ireland, a place on the west coast called the Burren, where a community of new friends and experiences awaited us. Also awaiting was the incredibly special Burren College of Art, where I set up a studio from 2012 to 2014. What started as a lark turned into two wonderful years for my family and was the impetus for establishing this summer painting workshop.

It’s one of the joys of my life to be able to celebrate the Burren’s mesmerizing beauty with those interested in painting. It’s a land of ancient ruins and stunning scenery and a landscape unlike any you’ve ever experienced.

Testimonials From Past workshops

David’s teaching style is anchored in the fundamentals of fine art. After watching his demonstrations, we had a clear, clean, and well-articulated understanding of David’s process. He allows ample time for individual instruction and meets each student at their respective level. David skillfully directs his constructive criticism, nudging each participant along their personal path. He makes it look easy, and we became better painters.

These were wonderfully long days, and we participated in a rich array of extracurricular activities. David orchestrates daily experiences that go well beyond painting: from dining in a private home, touring the Irish countryside, visiting private gardens, and listening to lectures from historians and fellow artists to strolling along the Irish beaches. Ballyvaughn is beautiful, and the Burren College of Art offers perfect studios for painting. David offers a rare peek into a culture and a life that he knows well. Bravo.

David’s Ireland painting workshop met all my expectations. He takes the time to help you learn how to evaluate your work and includes you in the problem-solving process. I came away with a thorough understanding of the area so that I could convey that in my painting. Making new art friends, great food, and a wonderful inn topped it off.

Three years ago, I had the extraordinarily good fortune to attend a week of painting at the beautiful Spannocchia farm and retreat in Italy. There, we were immersed in the beauty and culture of this wonderful magical place. With David’s guidance and encouragement, our painting abilities blossomed.

In fall 2024 one of my new friends asked if it was time to attend another of David’s workshops, this time in Ireland! We made it happen this year along with 10 other painters. There is nothing comparable to immersing oneself in the company of other artists with the aid of a knowledgeable teacher for an entire week! David, I thank you for your teaching experience, your encouraging words, and the way you made each day fun and exciting. What a gift you have of helping everyone. I can’t wait to attend another workshop in the future.

I had the good fortune in June 2025 to take one of David’s painting workshops in Ireland. I had no idea what to expect, and I can say that the six days in the Burren far exceeded my expectations. Every day was so well-organized and thoughtfully put together. From the tour of the Burren to the pubs and seafood restaurants, the great studio spaces at the Burren Art College, and the wonderful old Irish inn where we stayed—it was all exactly right. I can’t think of a single thing that I wished had been done differently. I came away from those six days happy and excited about doing more painting.
