Painting Workshops in Asheville

Having gone through the dramatic events of Hurricane Helene, I’m happy to say that the beautiful, old building where my studio is located has been fully restored and we are back in business. Situated in the heart of the River Arts District, my studio on the second floor overlooks the French Broad River and is spacious enough to accommodate up to six painters during weekend workshops. As with all my workshops, I provide the art materials so that you can simply show up ready to paint (which means wearing clothes that can get paint on them!).

While my teaching approach involves explaining the visual dynamics at work in a successful painting, one of the main focuses of the workshop is to help students loosen up and find that fearless, creative zone where exciting things start to happen. I hope you can join me.

Hours and location:

  • 10 a.m.–5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday

  • Warehouse Studio Building, 170 Lyman St., second floor

Price:

  • $395 for Saturday and Sunday

What’s included:

  • All art supplies: paint, canvas, palette, brushes, bucket, images, etc.

  • Daily demonstrations

  • One-on-one instruction on both days

  • Follow-up critique of work once the workshop is over

Testimonials From Past workshops

I’m a newbie, three-year acrylic painter and because of my love of David Skinner’s work I jumped at the chance to take a two-day workshop with him in his Asheville studio. It was worth every penny and effort I made to attend. As a person and an artist, David is the warmest, most easygoing, friendly, passionate, and enjoyable person. He is completely forthcoming and generous about all he has learned. Additionally, he easily talks about how he is challenged and continues to learn even after 30 years of painting. He is naturally patient, genuinely humble, and treats everyone with care and respect regardless of where you are on your painting path. I really believe that regardless of how long or short a time you have painted, David will serve you well as a teacher.

Taking a painting workshop from David Skinner was a fantastic experience! His encouraging and approachable style to painting made the studio environment creative and collaborative. His personal feedback and dialogue helped the entire class. I can’t wait to take a workshop from him again in the future.
